nrg-defra-5kw-eco-design-stove-multifuel-cast-iron-fireplace-portable-1846.jpgSummary: These simple and lightweight stoves burn wood and hexamine tablets as well as gas canisters, and white fuel through only one nozzle. They are popular in cold weather, but they can be noisy and lack simmer control.

nrg-5kw-eco-design-stove-multifuel-cast-iron-fireplace-portable-defra-approved-325.jpgSome multi fuel stoves uk-fuel stoves are hybrids capable of burning multiple kinds of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal, for instance, can burn both white and isobutane canisters of fuel.

Optimus Nova

The Optimus Nova multi-fuel stove can be used for a variety of liquid fuels. It comes with a quick-priming stove and an aluminum pump that self-purges, and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and wide spreading legs make it a solid stove that can be used on uneven ground. This makes it an ideal stove for base camps for groups kayaking, Arctic camp.

Contrary to many other liquid fuel stoves which have a problem of unburned fuel is left in the fuel line and the nozzle of the stove the Optimus Nova has a shut off mechanism that works by simply flipping the bottle over. This disconnects the intake hose from the fuel, forcing it to draw in air, which smothers the flame and depressurizes the bottle.

This is a clever solution to an old problem, and it works. The Nova can be used with any fuel bottle that has an o-ring seal, which includes MSR bottles. It comes with an oven bag that has pockets for spares, tools, lubricant, and the fuel pump.

This is a great all round backpacking stove for use in the UK, particularly for expeditions where a variety of fuels is necessary. The price is very affordable when compared with other canister stoves with similar capabilities. The Optimus Nova is also easy to maintain and a joy to use.

Kovea Hydra

The Kovea Hydra multi fuel stove 5kw fuel stove was first introduced in 2010 and has been a favourite choice for backpackers ever since. A few UK backpackers seem to give it much attention nowadays perhaps because they've fallen behind with more popular brands or whatever the latest lightweight stove from China or Korea is but this doesn't mean that the Hydra isn't still a great stove with its advantages.

It's a relatively compact and light stove that burns all liquid fuels, including white gas and propane butane, using a single nozzle. It's a typical stove design, with a burner bell bolted to an aluminum body that is anchored by three fold out support legs. The pump is above the fuel line, the generator loop runs around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above. The burner is a slow-moving flame type. This means that it is not susceptible to wind.

It's a remarkably versatile little cooker since it can be used with either isobutane canisters or propane canisters. It is easy to simmer on isobutane or propane and burns all types of fuel at a reasonable level, however it is a bit slower than some other stoves when using white gas.

The instructions for the Hydra are written in English, but they were not written by native users of the language. The instructions warn you against using certain kinds of lighter fluid. If you make a mistake, it can cause an accident and land Kovea in legal trouble. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas container from a reputable brand will work perfectly.

Primus OmniLite Ti

The Primus Omnilite Ti is a great option for those who are looking for an all-fuel stove that can cook using a variety of fuels. It can run on gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each type of fuel and can also be used to alter the size of the flame which is a great feature. This stove also comes with a fuel line that sits flat on the ground and is easily connected to the tank.

The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it needs maintenance to keep it running correctly. In particular it is prone to flare during priming, which could be dangerous. This issue is common to all stoves that use liquid fuel that utilize a secondary spindle at the stove's end instead of a coil to vaporize the fuel.

It is also important to know that each fuel type needs an individual jet. This means that if cooking on kerosene, the jet hole needs to be smaller than when using gas. It's a minor inconvenience however it's something to be aware of.

MSR Whisper Light

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the lightest, smallest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also easy to repair on the field. It can run on either canister fuel or liquid gas and includes attachments for both. The new design is lighter by 10% than its predecessor and the burner system was revamped to improve heat distribution. It's great for beginners or backpackers who are budget-conscious.

It takes a bit of time to install, prime and boil water, but the whistler Lite is a reliable camp stove that will not disappoint you. The flame is extremely powerful and can easily boil one Liter of water in two minutes. The only downside is that it doesn't cook like other stoves.

This is why MSR has developed the Dragonfly stove, which is a more capable simmering burner. It's similar to the whistler, but is smaller and has more performance. However, it's not as cheap as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is a great alternative, offering similar features for less than half the cost. Whisperlite International and Universal can be used with isobutane. The same fundamental design is used for both, however the Universal version can also be operated with fuel from canisters in addition.

Coleman Sportster II

Like many Coleman stoves this is a basic model that is rough and ready that will get the job done. It's compact, self-contained and solid, with the tank on the bottom and the burner on top. This makes it simple to use and a good option for Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves those who are new to backpacking, who want to reduce weight and for those of us who like to keep an extra or two in the van.

It is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha gas, also known as white gas) This stove can be used with unleaded gasoline as well. A gallon of gasoline will last as long as a typical Coleman liquid fuel cylinder, so you'll save money on fuel with this alternative.

Liquid fuel stoves have a learning curve, as you'll have to properly pressurize and prime them before you get a nice blue flame. If you don't do it right, your fuel may pool, spray beyond the burner, or even explode. To master this, practice outside before embarking on your excursion.

The stove will lose some of its performance and effectiveness if you use non-Coleman gasoline, but this is a tradeoff for its versatility. Make sure to purchase gasoline that isn't leaded and not augmented with methanol or ethanol (alcohol). These types of fuel could cause the unit's performance to degrade and even explode.

ATG Jiko

The ATG Jiko Multi Fuel Stove from South Africa is an ultralight multifuel designed for harsh environments like Africa. It's a compact and reliable all-in-one system that burns solid fuel, alcohol, tabs, and also gels using one nozzle. It's a light, minimalist design that costs less than most other multifuel stoves. It also comes with low ownership cost with fuel being less expensive per liter than gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves have an individual nozzle for each type of fuel. This makes them fiddly to change over in the rain or without gloves, and adds to their weight. The latest models of multifuel stoves have come up with a way to use the same nozzle to ignite various fuels, which makes it easier. These stoves are described as hybrids or Cheap multi fuel Stoves compressed fuel multifuel stoves. They are also referred to by other names such as isobutane, white gas, kerosene and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.

Another option is to purchase an multifuel stove kit which converts your standard Trangia burner into a multi fuel cooker.
